VISION Northwood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), building on our distinguished history of celebrating and sharing the joy, comfort, and inspiration of the good news of the gospel of God as revealed in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is increasingly a vigorous, vital, friendly, joyful, and confident urban church. We welcome all who need and seek to know and serve the Lord, regardless of age, race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, income, or education, and we seek to provide strong Christian witness in our changing community. Our enthusiastic membership is committed to living lives as individuals, as families, and as a congregation modeled after His example and open to His gift. We do this through welcoming, worship, learning, stewardship, witness, compassion, and service to our members, our neighbors, and our community.
What do the Disciples Believe? Like most Christians, Disciples Affirm: Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God, and offers saving grace to all. All persons are God's children. Disciples also believe and practice: Open Communion. The Lord's Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. Freedom of Belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith; belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others. Baptism by Immersion. In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life or trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored. Belief in the Oneness of the Church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service. Ministry of Believers. Both ministers and laypersons lead in worship, service, and spiritual growth
Joining our Church The only requirement for becoming a member of this congregation is a public affirmation of faith. Come forward during the hymn of dedication after the sermon, and the Pastor will lead you through a repetition of the confession made by all Christians since Peter first said it: "I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and I take Him as Lord and Savior of my life." Joining this community of faith carries no obligation other than a sincere desire to deepen your spiritual journey as you seek to apply the teachings of Christ to your daily life and to serve your maker in the ways that you are able or feel called to do so.
